How to Renew Your Driving License in Sri Lanka (2026 Guide)

A Quick Word Before We Start

I get this question more than almost any other. Tourists planning a longer stay in Sri Lanka, expats settling in, locals who realise their license has quietly expired — they all ask the same thing. How do I actually renew my driving license here?

I’ve been riding bikes in Sri Lanka for most of my life, and running a bike rental business here for years. I’ve helped dozens of customers sort out their driving paperwork before and after their trips. So let me give you the honest, practical version — no government-website jargon, just what you actually need to do.

Why It Matters — Especially If You’re Renting a Bike

If you’re planning to rent a bike and ride around Sri Lanka — whether for a weekend in the hill country or a two-week coastal loop — you need a valid license that’s recognised here. Riding without one isn’t just illegal, it means your travel insurance almost certainly won’t cover you if something goes wrong.

I always tell my customers the same thing: sort the paperwork before you land, and then just enjoy the trip. The roads from Mirissa to Tangalle, the climb up to Ella, the early morning ride along the Negombo coast — none of that is worth worrying about with unfinished admin hanging over you.

Who Needs to Renew?

Sri Lankan driving licenses are valid for a set period depending on the type of license and the age of the holder. If yours has expired — or is about to — you’ll need to renew before you can legally drive or ride.

The renewal process is handled through the Department of Motor Traffic (DMT), and you’ll need to visit one of their offices in person for at least part of the process.

What You’ll Need — Documents Checklist

  • Your expired or expiring driving license (original)
  • Your National Identity Card (NIC) or passport
  • A completed renewal application form (available at the DMT office or downloaded from their website)
  • A medical certificate from a registered doctor confirming you are fit to drive — this is required for renewals
  • Two passport-sized photographs
  • The renewal fee (fees vary depending on license category — budget around LKR 1,500 to 3,000)

One thing people always forget: the medical certificate. You need a doctor to sign off that you’re fit to drive or ride. Any registered GP can do this — it’s a quick appointment, but don’t leave it until the day of your visit to the DMT.

Step-by-Step: The Renewal Process

Step 1 — Get your medical certificate. Visit any registered doctor and ask for a fitness-to-drive certificate. Bring your NIC or passport. This typically takes 20 to 30 minutes and costs around LKR 500 to 1,000.

Step 2 — Fill out the application form. You can download this from the Department of Motor Traffic website, or pick one up at the office. Fill it in clearly — errors here slow everything down.

Step 3 — Visit your nearest DMT office. The main offices are in Werahera (the central DMT headquarters, where most people go), Colombo, Kandy, Galle, and other regional centres. Bring all your documents, your filled form, and your photographs.

Step 4 — Pay the renewal fee at the counter. Keep your receipt — you’ll need it to collect your license.

Step 5 — Wait for processing. In most cases, a temporary paper license is issued the same day and your physical card is ready within a few weeks. Some offices now offer same-day collection for renewals.

How Long Does It Take?

If your documents are all in order, the DMT visit itself usually takes a couple of hours — mostly waiting in queue. The physical card typically arrives within two to four weeks, though this varies. Your temporary paper license is valid in the meantime.

What If Your License Expired While You Were Abroad?

This comes up more often than you’d think. If you’ve been living or travelling abroad and your Sri Lankan license expired while you were away, the process is essentially the same — but you may be asked to provide additional evidence of your residency or travel history. Bring your passport with entry/exit stamps to be safe.

And If You’re a Foreign Visitor Renting a Bike?

This is slightly different. Foreign visitors don’t renew a Sri Lankan license — you need to get your foreign license validated by the Automobile Association of Ceylon (AAC) and obtain a local temporary permit. An International Driving Permit alone is not enough in Sri Lanka.

I handle this process for all my rental customers. Send me your license, passport, and a headshot via WhatsApp before you travel — I’ll have your temporary permit ready for collection when you land in Colombo. It takes 15 minutes of your time and saves hours of confusion at the airport.
